About Ribbon Cables / IDC Cables
Congatec Ribbon Cables / IDC Cables
Ribbon cables, also referred to as Flat cables, are cables with multiple conductors arranged in a parallel ribbon configuration. They are primarily constructed with insulated conductors, bundled into a flat, ribbon-like shape. They are commonly used for data transmission in computers, as well as a variety of industrial equipment and consumer electronics.Ribbon cables usually have IDC (insulation displacement contact) connectors, which allow for faster and easier wire insertion. IDC connectors consist of two pieces; a base and a wedge-shaped probe. When the cable ribbon is pushed into the IDC connector, the probe displaces the insulation, making contact with the conductors. To ensure a strong connection, a strong retention force is provided between the cable and contact. These connectors are designed to be used in multiple circuits, allowing each conductor to be connected individually. This allows for versatility when routing wires and easier troubleshooting.
